The Haunting of Croome Court

The Haunting of Croome Court: Ghosts of the Coventry Legacy Tucked away in the Worcestershire countryside, Croome Court stands as a paragon of Georgian elegance, once the pride of the 6th Earl of Coventry. But beneath its stately facade lies a murkier tale—one whispered through cold corridors and echoed in unexplained sounds. The grandeur may be restored, but some believe the past never truly left. A House of Grandeur… and Ghosts? Built in the mid-18th century, Croome Court was designed by Capability Brown, with interiors styled by Robert Adam. It's the sort of place that should exude comfort and control. Yet those who’ve worked and visited the house have reported something far stranger—an eerie presence that hangs in certain rooms like an invisible fog. Cold spots. Mysterious footsteps. Piano music played with no one in sight. These aren't just atmospheric flourishes—they’re recurring events reported by National Trust staff, volunteers, and visitors alike. The Ghost of Maria Gunning? The most frequently named spirit is thought to be Maria Gunning, the tragic Countess of Coventry. Celebrated in her time for her beauty, Maria died young under suspicious and painful circumstances—said to be from the toxic lead-based cosmetics she wore. Some believe her soul still lingers at Croome, particularly in the private apartments where her presence is most strongly felt. Witnesses have described a woman in 18th-century dress gliding through the halls, her face pale and unreadable. One volunteer reportedly felt a sudden wave of sadness in the dressing room, as though walking through someone else’s despair. Echoes in the East Wing The now-restored East Wing is another hotspot for activity. Doors open and close of their own accord. Disembodied voices murmur from behind locked doors. On one chilling occasion, a member of staff claimed to feel a hand rest gently on their shoulder, only to turn and find the room empty. Malvern Paranormal’s Interest While we’ve yet to officially investigate Croome Court, it's firmly on our radar. The layered history, personal tragedy, and persistent paranormal reports make it a compelling candidate for a future investigation. We'd love to connect with anyone who has experienced unusual activity there firsthand. Have You Seen Something at Croome? If you've had a ghostly encounter at Croome Court—or anywhere in Worcestershire—get in touch. Malvern Paranormal is always interested in gathering accounts and, where possible, arranging respectful investigations of historic properties.
